Decibel Meter

Accuracy & Support

One person answers this mailbox, usually within a day or two: support@decibelmeterapp.com. But the most common question has a long answer, so it goes first.

"It reads differently from my real sound level meter"

It almost certainly does, and a difference of 3–6 dB is normal. A gap of 10–20 dB is common on some handsets. This is not a bug in the app; it is the gap between a phone microphone and a calibrated instrument. Here is why, so you can judge how much to trust a reading.

The microphone is not calibrated

A Type 1 or Type 2 meter uses a measurement microphone with a known, flat free-field response. A phone uses a tiny MEMS capsule chosen for voice calls, tuned by the manufacturer, and different between models and even between units of the same model.

Automatic gain control

Many Android devices apply AGC or noise suppression to the microphone stream below the level any app can see. The app asks the system for a raw stream, but whether it gets one is up to the device. AGC pulls loud sounds down and quiet ones up, which flattens exactly the range you are trying to measure.

Clipping above about 95 dB

Most phone inputs saturate well below the levels found in industry or at a concert. Once the signal clips, the reading stops rising even as the sound does, so a very loud environment often reads low, not high. Treat anything above roughly 95 dB as "loud enough to need a real meter".

What is covering the microphone

A case, a finger, a pocket, dust in the port — each costs several dB. Hold the phone in open air, microphone port uncovered, pointed toward the source, and keep your hand away from the bottom edge.

How to calibrate

  1. Find a reference: a Type 2 sound level meter, or a calibrated one someone will lend you for ten minutes.
  2. Put both in the same place, same height, same direction, in a steady sound — not speech, not music with gaps. Running water or a fan is ideal.
  3. Let both settle, then note the difference.
  4. In System → Microphone calibration, apply that difference as the offset, up to ±10 dB.

The offset is one fixed number applied at all frequencies. It makes the app agree with your reference at that level, in that spectrum. It does not make the microphone linear, and it does not extend the range above which clipping ruins the reading. Every report states the offset that was applied, so a reader can see the numbers were adjusted.

The meter shows nothing

  1. Check the microphone permission. Android Settings → Apps → Decibel Meter → Permissions. Without it the app stops and clears rather than inventing a reading.
  2. Another app may hold the microphone. A call, a voice recorder, a video app or a smart-assistant can take exclusive access. Close them and reopen this app.
  3. Check the port is not blocked — case, lint, a screen protector overlapping the bottom edge.
  4. If it still shows nothing, write to us with the phone model and Android version. A device that cannot deliver an audio stream to the app is something we want to know about.

The app never shows a simulated reading in a release build. If the meter is moving, it is hearing something.

The dosimeter

What the dose percentage means

It is accumulated exposure as a share of the NIOSH recommended limit: an 8-hour time-weighted average of 85 dB(A). 100% means you have had a full day's recommended exposure. The time remaining counts down on the same basis.

What it cannot know

Use it as an indication that a place is worth measuring properly, not as a medical or legal determination.

The report

What is free and what needs an ad?

Everything that bears on hearing safety is free and always will be: the average, the maximum, the peak, the duration, the dose, and the warning if you crossed 85 dB. The rewarded ad adds the per-minute log and the octave bands — corroboration for a complaint, not the verdict.

"Pause the meter to build a report"

A report of a measurement still in progress would be a report of a number still moving. Pause first; the figures are then final for that stretch.

The detailed log locked itself again

It lasts for the current session, and the app says so before the ad plays. Closing the app returns it to locked. Nothing was bought and nothing was lost.

Ads

An ad appeared while I was measuring

It should not, and we treat this as a serious defect rather than an annoyance — an ad during a measurement is time the microphone was not listening, which leaves the dose figure quietly wrong. The app is built to refuse a full-screen ad while the meter runs. If you saw one, please write with the phone model and what you were doing.

Changing ad personalisation

System → Ads → Ad privacy options reopens the consent form where that option is available in your region. You can also reset your advertising ID in Android Settings → Privacy → Ads.

Other

Does the app record what it hears?

No. Audio is analysed frame by frame in memory and discarded; no file is created and nothing is transmitted. See the privacy policy, which sets this out in detail.

Deleting my data

Uninstalling removes everything the app stored. Measurements were never written to disk at all. See the deletion page.

Writing to us

Including these usually saves a round trip:

  • phone model and Android version;
  • the app version, at the bottom of the System screen;
  • what the app read, what your reference read, and the calibration offset you had applied — all three, or the numbers cannot be compared.

You are welcome to attach a report. Please do not send passwords or personal documents; nothing about this app ever needs them.
